I've already looked up all the names and they are all available at either .com, .org, or .co
How is pruning a name choice down by votes stupid?
"Just as with Western democracy, we're not certain if the best name is on the list, or if all interested parties will be able to vote."
Seeing how we don't have infinite time and infinite man power I don't see how we're supposed to look at every single word because it has the potential to be a "better" name than anything on this list....
There's no reason members can't vote by proxy. That policy is being written into the bylaws right now.
Are people going to fund us when we don't even have a name? Are we going to find new members for funding possiblities/affiliations without a name/ aren't taken seriously?
"Yes, a name is required to process the 501 (c) (3) paperwork, HOWEVER, we do not have the money or the (final draft) bylaws needed to then begin the 501 (c) (3) motion."
Also, I don't see how the reason we shouldn't pick a name is because we don't have money. Wouldn't that be a non-sequitor?
We are setting up the dues process in the bylaws which have to be voted on by members.

More names exist than are on a single candidate list which is populated with entries that are not entirely available. Pruning only that list where other priorities need be met (logically) prior IS stupid. Colossally so. Am I not speaking English?! Read my post(s). Where did I say that we should not pick a name? Where did I say that we have an infinite retainer of time for which to do absolutely nothing. While our real priorities lay elsewhere, we should not be hasty in dubbing ourselves because that name alone initially pushes all information about us. That is what I said. Drafting bylaws 'lickety-split' and drawing a name for ourselves from one compromised list is a mistake.
Why should we be taken seriously during our infancy, we've proved nothing. People fund rooted causes. Also, we already have an artificial (not proven dedicated) glut of new members scattered between however many websites have been launched to support a B'ham hs. They what, were feeling Google lucky?
Yes, we need a name, but seeing as how that is not our first sequential priority, why settle? There is time enough to craft the perfect title instead of running down a list only to wait for further progress. Why are we zipping to the next red light? A less than ideal name will cripple us, permanently! That is all. Not repeating this simple point.

And no, I will not pooh-pooh our actions come the time proper to christen this outfit. Just want this baby primed for substantial gain over accelerated mediocrity.

the list is missing I/O i am very tickled that labresaurus hax was voted in. no one liked anthro site?! i thought it rather clever.
i suggest we give the new list some breathing room and let people discuss amongst themselves or on the boards for a couple weeks what they like and why. it will take longer than that before the bylaws are subject to any official use. i like the winnow down roshemon method. and if someone has an amazing lightening bolt idea in the mean time that we all like, i'm sure discussion will allow its inclusion... lightening bolt idea.... lightening volt... lightening rod... lightening pod... can't stop.

We are going to let the group decide this issue at the next meeting. If the majority wishes to postpone the decision then it will be done. Also letting more names be added by a majority vote (up or down to add more names not specific names)this will happen until no more names are suggested.
I already have one proxy vote.
Trae, do you vote postpone? Yea/Nay and I will tally you in.

True. I did not assume that the name voting would be completed within the next few meetings anyway.
I think that everyone will decide to allow more names be added, but we do need to allow the group at large decide. I have a few more suggestions that I would like to add myself.

i vote postpone another week, but regardless of whether that happens, at the next meeting there should be an open round table discussion (>5min) about what people like and why. and make sure everyone present makes their views known. and i think the idea of voting 2 faves then wait a week and vote 1 final vote is the best idea so far. votes by email are understandable, as this is finals for those in school.

I suggest not postpone but continue adding and voting until no more names are added. I consider this a more active method to coming up with the name since it will simultaneously trim the fat and bring in new suggestions. In this way we will continue until we exhaust the membership's ideas or until they become weary of the additions.

I think its fine to keep the list open until the time comes that a vote is required (ratification of the bylaws) and then we can do consecutive votes cutting down the list until one wins. Also, I would like to add one more name to the list:
MakerLab Lab
