A few people have suggested public wifi as a group project.
Either we would work with antennas and gain to extend the range of public networks or use xbee units (JD's suggestion) to create nodes for increasing the size of a network. These could then be distributed in neighborhoods with schools or libraries to extend the infrastructures to people who cannot afford broadband service.
If we were to coordinate our results with city government organizations and schools we could use this project as a way to garner attention.

sounds cool... we could use either WRT54G with DDWRT software and range-extend a public network from a single source, or possibly use an Xbee wireless mesh network to act as a repeater for signals from a wifi router.
Would be a fun radio project if nothing else.
